چکیده

The shape of the line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) is measured for a sample of 14 elliptical galaxies, predominantly low-luminosity ellipticals. The sample is dominated by galaxies in the Virgo cluster but also contains ellipticals in nearby groups and low density environments. The parameterization of the LOSVD due to Gerhard and van der Marel & Franx is adopted, which measures the asymmetrical and symmetrical deviations of the LOSVD from a Gaussian by the amplitudes h3 and h4 of the Gauss-Hermite series. Rotation, velocity dispersion, h3 and h4 are determined as a function of radius for both major and minor axes. Non-Gaussian LOSVDs are found for all galaxies along the major axes. Deviations from a Gaussian LOSVD along the minor axis are of much lower amplitude if present at all. Central decreases in velocity dispersion are found for three galaxies. Two galaxies have kinematically-decoupled cores: NGC 4458 and the well-known case of NGC 3608.

Gravitational Lensing and Elliptical Galaxies

The probability that high-redshift quasars are gravitationally-lensed by intervening galaxies increases rapidly with the cosmological constant, ΩΛ0 (whilst being only weakly dependent on the density parameter, Ωm0), and the low number of lenses observed implies that ΩΛ0 ∼< 0.7 (e.g. Kochanek 1996). One of many uncertainties has been the (small) core radii of elliptical galaxies, which, at least...

Line-of-sight velocity distribution corrections for Lick/IDS indices of early-type galaxies

We investigate line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) corrections for absorption line-strength indices of early-type galaxies in the Lick/IDS system. This system is often used to estimate basic stellar population parameters such as luminosity weighted ages and metallicities. Using single stellar population model spectral energy distributions by Vazdekis (1999) we find that the LOSVD correc...

Structural and Dynamical Uncertainties in Modeling Axisymmetric Elliptical Galaxies

Quantitative dynamical models of galaxies require deprojecting the observed surface brightness to determine the luminosity density of the galaxy. Existing deprojection methods for axisymmetric galaxies assume that a unique deprojection exists for any given inclination, even though the projected density is known to be degenerate to the addition of “konus densities” that are invisible in projecti...

eb 2 00 1 DYNAMICS OF STARS AND GLOBULAR CLUSTERS IN M 87 Aaron

We examine the dynamics of the stars and globular clusters in the nearby giant elliptical galaxy M87 and constrain the mass distribution, using all the available data over a large range of radii, including higher-order moments of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distributions and the discrete velocities of over two hundred globular clusters. We introduce an extension of spherical orbit modeli...

Hobby - Eberly Telescope Observations of the Dark Halo in Ngc 821

The best constraints on dark halo properties of elliptical galaxies come from large radii; however, observations at these radii are difficult due to the faint stellar light and/or sparse kinematic tracers (i.e., globular clusters, planetary nebulae). We present line-of-sight stellar velocity distributions of elliptical galaxy NGC 821 obtained to approximately 100 (over 2 effective radii) with l...
